Learning and Growing Together

Music Information

We believe that music plays an important role in enriching our curriculum, and provides exciting opportunities for children to grow in confidence and perform.

We are proud that we have over 120 children who play a musical instrument in school and with our choir, we have over 40 children who sing together.

At Westgate Academy we provide many musical opportunities, including:

  • Instrumental lessons - singing, piano,  recorder, flute, clarinet, violin, cello, trumpet, drums, guitar and clarinet
  • Wider Opportunities - whole school Djembe drumming: children are selected each Wednesday throughout the year to partake in 'Music Wednesdays'.
  • Singing Leaders - each class has three and these form our singing leaders choir.
  • Westgate Instrumentalists - Instrumentalists are selected to perform at certain assemblies throughout the year.

    CHARANGA

Children follow an award-winning scheme called CHARANGA in school music lessons. Below is the curriculum that each year group follows throughout the year. Guardians are more than welcome to look at these songs with their child experts.

    Singing Leaders

Westgate Academy is proud of its long-standing tradition of a school choir. Up to 3 children from each class (singing leaders) come together and perform songs accompanied by live instruments on Friday afternoons at 2.50pm. The group is ran and organised by Mr Lindsay and Mr Aisthorpe. We welcome any adult volunteers wishing to get involved with the group.

Keep your eyes peeled for events featuring the singing leaders this year.

Westgate Academy works in unison with the Lincoln Cathedral choir. Many of our current and ex-pupils have performed in the choir at wonderful events including 'Songs of Praise'. Look at the information below to find out how to enrol:

Be A Chorister At Lincoln Cathedral

The Music Department is always on the look out for enthusiastic youngsters to join the choir. We currently have spaces for boys and girls in years 3, 4 and 5.  For more information or to organise a formal audition, please contact the Music Department on 01522 561649 or music@lincolncathedral.com

Lincoln Cathedral is a magnificent venue for world-class church music, a tradition in which it has played a prominent role in for centuries. The music team here at the Cathedral train and inspire young people typically aged between 7 and 12 of all backgrounds to be a chorister. All we ask is that they love to sing and can carry a tune; we then develop their musical ability, they make new friends and learn how to be part of a high-performing team.

We have two choirs, one for boys and one for girls. They sing alternate services, coming together for large events, such as Christmas and Easter, as well as for concerts, broadcasts and tours. In recent years the choir has toured USA, France and the Netherlands: we sing and we have fun!

Every chorister has found that the high quality musical education they have received enhances their academic work and a reference to high quality choral singing ranks highly in university and employment applications.

We ask for commitment to the choir and it is demanding when you strive to be the best you can, the sense of reward makes it all worthwhile.
